Fun Activities to do at Home
Tags: Stay Home, Fun Activities, Family Activities
With everything that is currently happening in our society regarding COVID-19, there has been a lot of questions and many of us wonder as what is going to happen. Things are constantly changing day-by-day and no one truly has all the answers that we are looking for. As of right now, we know that the best thing we can do is practice social distancing and stay at home if and whenever possible. Being at home does not mean you are stuck and have to watch Netflix all day. Here is a list of some fun activities you can do at home during this time with your loved ones:
1. Have a picnic
Set out a blanket and a basket of food and have a picnic for lunch or dinner. This is something you can do in your living room or outside in your backyard with your family. It’s a fun way to change up your meal routine while being at home. If you want to get really creative you could have a themed picnic or even decorate for your picnic by making signs and decorations.
2. Have a scavenger hunt
Everyone loves to hunt for hidden things, and with Easter right around the corner this would be the perfect activity to do at home. Write out a list of things that need to be found and give everyone a copy of the list. It can be things that are found within your home, or a list of things that can be found while on a walk in the neighbourhood. Be as creative as you’d like with this activity, having clues for older children and adults, or pictures and words for younger children.
3. Make a movie
Work together with those who you are at home with to create an at-home movie on your device. Most smartphones and tablets can handle the recording of these types of movies and some may even allow you to edit them. This is something that can keep the kids busy for hours while working together and having fun. When it’s done you can even send it virtually to other friends and family members and see what they think about it.
4. Build forts
This is something that a lot of people remember doing as kids. You don’t need a lot of materials to build a fort at home. You should already have most of the materials already in your home. Some of the materials you might need include: sheets or blankets, pillows, comforters or sleep bags, couch, chairs or a bed and a flashlight. Building a fort is totally up to your own imagination and you can make it as big and as fun as you want it to be.
5. Host a themed movie night
Set up some decorations that you have at home and have a family fun movie night. There are various themes you could do for your movie night. Plan a whole day or evening of back-to-back viewings of your favourite movies and decide what snacks you are going to have with it. If you want to be really creative, you can even find or make props that go with the movie and set them out in your house. This is sure to be a fun activity for the entire family.
6. Play games
Nothing is better than being at home and pulling out the board games to play together. There are so many options to choose from nowadays where you can even play board games digitally. There is an app called Houseparty where you have to draw something and others have to guess what it is that you are drawing, and it can be done by video chat. This means that you can play with those who you are not at home with and still have fun while practicing social distancing.
7. Learn something new
A lot of people’s New Year's resolution is to learn something new. But, how many are able to accomplish this resolution each year? This is the perfect time to do so. Learning something new is always fun and interesting. Some examples include, learning calligraphy, learning a new language, or learning to play a new instrument.
8. Try a new recipe
While being at home, this is the time to finally try that recipe you have been wanting to. Whether it is a new baking recipe or a fun dinner idea. If you want to get the kids involved, you can always start your own baking show and record the process of trying out a new recipe. It would be something fun to look back on and re-watch in the future.
9. Get some fresh air
As important as it is to stay inside during this time period, it is also important to get some fresh air. This can be done by hanging out in your backyard or going for a walk in your neighbourhood or local trails while continuing to practice the social distancing rule.
10. Connect with friends and family
During this time, it is important to continue to stay connected with your loved ones virtually since you may not be able to see each other physically. There are numerous ways to stay connected with the ones you love with the help of various technological devices and apps. Some popular apps to use include: Messenger, Facetime, WhatsApp, Google Hangouts, Zoom, Snapchat and Skype. Another way to stay connected is to send letters or cards in the mail, as this could be a fun activity for the kids to go and check the mailbox when on their way for a walk and see if they have received anything from loved ones.
